After I watched this late last night (thank you Kinchafoonie), it was time to walk the dogs. The ground was moist after a night of heavy rain. The frog chorus was loud, and I'm thinking maybe tonight isn't a good idea to walk them barefoot, without a flashlight.
I took Bernie on his leash as always, because old as he is, he's a runaway...right through the fence wires. Checked out the dog waterer for "my" cute toads who use it for midnight swims, and on an aloe leaf, stretched out is a strikingly beautiful "bracelet". My old brain had a fart just then trying to compute "red to yellow, kill a fellow", and I lost precious time after I realized it was a scarlet snake whose bands are different "red to black, ok Jack". So I got myself together, sprinted to the kitchen to grab a camera, and when I came back, it was gone. I've only seen 2 of these in the vicinity of the yard, in over 20 years.
I think it must live among the aloes. They are big and spreading and have formidable teeth.
I thought about how many snakes I've seen here in the yard, hoped that the armadillo who visits often or lives here in my overgrown corral (I saw him the other night), will root all the snakes out and eat them (maybe that's why it it's so big), lives long and prospers, keeping the dogs, Dottie and me, safe.
